This post Contain's Moaning....

Well..Im not sure how many of you have seen the new design on certain cigarette packet's??

Today...the packet I purchased had a dead body on it with the word's 'Smoker's Die younger'... other's had diseased body part's!

Not nice to look at, and as a smoker I am aware of the risk's and what I am doing to my body...But it's my choice...One which I do regret starting...But giving up seem's impossible!

I just feel that ...yet again it's the smoker's that are 'Picked on' if ya like!

Do you see diseased liver's on alcohol bottle's...Or obese people on fast food carton's...Of course not...So why is it acceptable to put those images onto cigarette packet's??

Totally agree with you!

And if we are to believe the warnings about smoking - and it is 'THAT DANGEROUS' then shouldn't it be banned - tobacco that is - taken off the shelves as an illegal and dangerous drug.

Well lets ask the question why the government doesn't do that! Would 'money' have anything to do with it?
The Government makes money on smokers - some say the NHS itself depends on it ? If I'm wrong then let me know - but there must be a 'reason' why the government allows such a dangerous substance to be freely available?

  Let's be honest...We are told that almost everything we do is bad for us...What we eat,drink...inhale even. But still these product's are available to us??
  
  And...you have hit the nail right on the head...the tax that the government get from them. Cigarettes are one of the biggest revenue earner's for the government...And inject alot of cash toward's our health service... Who say smoker's cost the most ...Along with alcoholic's im sure??

First off - please don't take this as a personal attack. It isn't. I'm just answering your question from the point of view of an ex-smoker.

Smoking is much more addictive than either eating junk food or drinking alcohol, so the images you see on packets are to try and deter the younger, new smoker, who might still have a chance. When people see smokers they don't see the effects first hand, like they do when they see the drunken heap outside the nightclub spewing their guts up, or the obese person tucking into a burger outside McDs. Okay, the smell is there, but they don't have a visual of the damage (unless they share a space with a smoker coughing their guts up in the morning - something I was so happy to experience during my childhood - listening to my Dad cough until he vomited.)

You can drink alcohol in moderation and it can be beneficial. You can have burgers in moderation, and although it certainly can't be beneficial, a burger every now and then isn't gonna kill you. You can't smoke in moderation and addiction creeps up on you.

Smoking smells dreadful, it ruins your skin and hair, gives you wrinkles, causes lung cancer and other cancers, poisons your blood, makes you sluggish and breathless, looks nasty, and costs a small fortune.

As you can probably guess, I'm anti-smoking. I used to smoke, and I still miss it. I hate that my body, even after almost 10 years, still craves something that is so bad for me. I wish I craved something sensible like apples LOL

My husband smokes. I long to be able to kiss him without holding my breath. I hate that he is slowly killing himself. I hate that I could be spending his last years by his bedside watching him die like my Mum watched my Dad die of cancer. I hate that my kids are exposed to someone thinking that smoking is okay, because although right now they are anti, ultimately the idea it is okay is insidiously working its way into their subconscious.

I love being able to go into a cafe or pub and not have to breathe smoke. I hate that my man rushes out seconds after finishing his meal so he can smoke outside, leaving us at table.

There is nothing good about smoking, and I think that is one reason why they are so heavy on the images they put on packets.

    Yeah, smoking is one of my bugbears. Sorry to go off on one on your blog.
    
    The reason I 'beat it' was because I found out I was pregnant with my son. I cut down to a maximum of 5 a day. Some days I managed to with one or two, others, the full 5. Never more than that. When I went into labour with him he was 'in distress' and fortunately the labour was quick. Unfortunately, he was born blue, and had to go straight into oxygen. He has suffered from hearing problems all his life, from which he has gone thru 4 operations. I am told by his doctors that this is because I smoked when I was pregnant with him. How good does that make me feel?

      I did'nt smoke through either of my pregnancies...I could'nt...just the smell made me sick...but I did start again after I had them!! God know's why!
      
      I know people that chuffed through out there whole pregnancy and went on to have healthy children..and other's who did'nt smoke and had poorly kid's... who really know's what the risks are? Don't beat your self up over your boy...It may not have been your fault.. but at least something good came from it and you quit.

Smokers are seen as social lepers these days and are penalised every which way - even more than motorists.

There's a trick to giving up smoking - or at least, one that worked for me. I gave up a 40-a-day habit, so believe me if giving up is your goal it really can be done.

    The trick that worked for me (and for a few other people I know too) was simply to say "No!" I'll admit I've lapsed once or twice, but smoking a cigarette just made me feel sick, so it never lasted more than a few drags. It's just willpower Milly - you have to want to do it.
    
    A friend of mine drank salt water every time he wanted a fag - he'd given up by the end of a fortnight.

Hello milly ... I agree with you totally

When I first started reading your post I was going to say 'It's only a picture' but as I kept reading and you explained about pictures not being on other un-healthy products I stop and thought ... 'YES She's right and that maybe we could petition to either have the images taken away or to have images added to the other un-healthy products.

For me personally it is only an image to try and make you feel bad about doing something that could kill you ... In my mind Death is a Certain thing ... we are all going to die ... but do we live our lives in fear of what we do to quicken death or do we ENJOY what we do and Accept that Death can come at any time.

Hmmmmm makes me believe that I WILL Enjoy what I do and Accept that I am going to die one day and that if it related to smoking then so Be it.

  I just think that if they are going to promote item's that harm our body so strongly..then it should apply to all those thing's that damage our body's?!
  
  People die from alcohol all the time..As much as smoker's I bet...So why not schock them? ..But on the other hand,as pointed out by purpledragon in her comment...It would serve as a deterrent for the next generation?

I don't smoke and I am a bit undecided about this. I can see why they do it - to deter young people from starting - but I do wonder why they don't just enforce a ban it 'for the greater good' rather than penalise and marginalise those who make the choice to smoke. Oh yes - the money from the tobacco industry, that's why!

I am inclined to agree with the diseased livers on alcoholic drinks, if they are going to do it on cigarettes. I don't agree with putting it on food though - everyone knows junk food is bad for you by now and I think it's a choice, more than a smoking or alcohol addiction.

Smoking and drinking need to stop being so appealing, that's the problem, especially for young people. Sadly they realise too late. There are NO benefits to smoking and it's a shame that the industry is worth so much - it all comes down to money, there will never be a ban - and yet I think it's far more dangerous than many of the drugs they get so dramatic about.

And yes, you can quit. I know many many heavy smokers who have quit. It isn't easy, but it isn't impossible, there are many ways to help you. I'm not going to lecture as obviously everyone has to make these choices for themselves, but maybe it's time to give it a try, seeing as you really can't escape seeing the reality anymore.

  I do want to quit..For my family's sake.. My dad smoked..I smoke..I smoked... I don't want my girl's to follow my lead..I should be setting them an example.. They were disgusted by the images on the packet's...As they could see what smoking does inside ...

Now, I am a total hater of smoking!
Reason being that my mum, aunt and their father all died from emphysema caused by smoking. I watched them die awful deaths.

OK, so that out of the way and please, no way am I telling you off. It's your life and it's up to you to do what you wish. I drink instead...so we all have our vices!

I think it's really over the top to post these photos on the packets. I've not seem them yet though. Nonetheless I don't agree with it. Everyone over 18 are considered to be adults and able to know what they are doing. So why are they not left to do that?!?! I do believe in having the right mindset before you will give up smoking. Dieting is the same too. If your mind isn't totally happy to pack it in it won't. I know that from dieting!

  I know first hand what smoking does...My dad has C.O.P.D...similar to emphysema and I see how he struggle's to breathe, he was a smoker for 20 odd year's and gave up when diagnosed...I admire him for that!

Ultimately, you as the adult should be allowed to make an adult decision and choose whether to smoke or not.

We all know the risks. How people choose to proceed is up to them. We, as a country, do not need to follow a nanny culture that seems to be taking over.

    Only you will know how you influence your kids. Again, smoking around them is your choice to make. I would imagine you have educated them as to the risks and they will then make their choices once adulthood arrives. If they start smoking early... that's something you will have to deal with as a parent, irrespective of if you influenced them or not.
    
    I used to smoke but gave up a few years ago. If it comes back to bite me as I age then I know I only have myself to blame. I went into it knowing the risks.

      They are aware of the risk's..they see what it's done to thier grampy..they tell me it will kill me...They even threatened me with putting me in 'The Smoke Room' ...some kid's program on tele...To help thier parent's quit!!

Nothing new. These days all our lives are politically controlled by a bunch of nit-wits.

Stopping smoking is once again no more than mind over matter. I convinced myself way back in 1961 and I have never had the slightest desire to smoke ever since.

You have to tell yourself and mean it. What's the point in lying to yourself?

It's one thing to put warnings on ciggarette packets, because that doesn't cost anything. What bugs me is the government spending money on ad campaigns advising people to do what anyone with half a brain would do. If you don't wear a seatbelt, you'll go smack into the steering wheel and it'll probably kill you. No shit, sherlock. That's why I wear a seatbelt. Why should we have taxpayer's money spent on educating people who don't have the instinct for self-preservation?

(Of course, that could kind of apply to ciggarettes as well, but like I said, messages on packets don't cost anything)

  I agree hun...there seem's to be alot of 'common Sense' advert's about recently...Mainly the seat belt one's !! And yes...It would'nt cost anything to place those messages there... But...by shocking people into realising what smoking does may encourage people to quit..and there fore reducing the amount of income the government get's!

    It's a tricky one really. You want to discourage people from doing things that are bad for them, but you don't want to treat adults like children (which seems to happen a lot these days). I personally think the smoking messages are a good thing (as long as there's not too much money spent on them). Let's shame the buggers into quitting! (Or scare them as the case may be)
    
    Saw your post about your brother's birthday by the way. Hope you're doing okay. I'm coming up for 8 weeks now, don't really want to think about 8 months just yet xx

Well, maybe you could use that scared feeling to your advantage and maybe kick it in the head? Sounds like you want to.

Time is a healer, and I've experienced some of that already. It's more a case of being willing to let go, which can be hard to do. Reality sucks.

As an ex-smoker, I know that you have to want to give it up - nothing else will persuade you. So I'm not sure if these images help deter people from smoking. I also feel that alcohol has become one of the biggest health issues in this country.

But you can give it up if you really want to - I did!
